The museum of crystal of the Dyatkovo crystal
plant is a unique establishment in the best and
happiest sense. The plant had been working for
45 years already when in 1835, thanks to the state
wise idea, the Complete Book of Laws of the Russian Empire registered
the thesis on founding displaying models (smotrovaya)
plant departments. The text of the thesis brilliantly
formulated their aims: "to be a school for
masters, a store of ideas for artists and to ease
the management for the owners".
Since then the plant's display department, which
was also called the plant's museum, has started
collecting and keeping models of mass and serial
produce, items made by order, samples and experimental
objects, popular foreign glassware. The Dyatkovo crystal
plant got through periods of success and failure.
In 1894 it was included into the Stockholders'
Society "The Maltsovs' Plants", and
by the end of the XIX century it had turned into
the biggest producer of dinner glassware in Russia.
The museum has accumulated a
vast collection of glass, which reflects the basic
trends in the development of the plant, ways and
methods of processing and working goods made of
coloured glass and crystal. It also shows the
applied technology, the growth of skills, inherited
by each subsequent generation, and a change in
the trends of fashion.
The museum has been functioning
successfully for more than a century. The Great
Patriotic War (World War II) was the most terrible
experience for the museum. Before the Bryansk
region was occupied by German fascists, the plant's
museum, like the basic equipment and machinery,
was evacuated to the east of the country. Eye-witnesses
state that three railway carriages with ancient
glass were evacuated. After the liberation of
the town, only one of them came back to Dyatkovo.
Is it true? For the time being, this question
remains a puzzle of our "crystal room".
The next stage in the history of the museum is
connected with 1976, when our museum was fortunate
enough to welcome Stepan Dmitrievich Polyanski,
a member of the CPSU Central Committee Politburo.
On visiting the plant the statesman was staggered
by the collection of crystal in the museum of
At that time the museum occupied
a small room on the territory of the plant. Masterpieces
of the XIX century and modern works were kept
on shelves rising from the floor up to the ceiling.
There was no system or chronological order in
keeping them. But right opposite the plant there
was started the construction of a new department
store. And so S.D.Polyanski declared: "This
building is to become the museum!"
And it came true! On July 31,
1976 there was ceremoniously opened the museum
of glass and crystal of the Dyatkovo crystal plant.
It was for the first time in the history of the
glass industry when the plant's museum was dislocated
in a separate huge building outside the plant.
The exposition area was more than 2600 square
metres. The museum became available to any person
wishing to attend it. The historic part of the
collection of the former displaying models department,
modern decorum works of artists, unique works
of the best masters have become a self-dependent
event in artistic culture since. The collection
being extremely bright and impressive, the museum
has turned into one of the most popular sights
of the Bryansk region.
Our museum can be endlessly spoken about. In the
exposition halls of the museum we can learn about
the life-story and activities of the Maltsovs,
Russian manufacturers who founded our plant and
created a large industrial empire. The writer-ethnographer
Vasili Ivanovich Nemirovich-Danchenko called this
area "America in Russia". The whole
history of the biggest and oldest crystal plant
in Russia, covering more than two centuries, can
be traced in the exposition halls of our museum.
We have a peculiar way of showing the exposition.
Items of decorum are placed on open podiums. There
are no obstacles between an exhibit and a visitor.
The exhibits can be viewed circularly, as if they
were existing in an open space, organizing it
round themselves, filling it with their bright
images and light-emanating essence of that wonderful
and unique material which we call 'glass'.
Should you see it at least once,
you will fail to ever forget it!
There is one more particular
characteristic of our museum. That is our scientific
staff, which has not changed for over 16 years.
The specific nature of our work lies in the fact
that the scientific staff of the museum act simultaneously
as exposition-makers and decorators, researchers
and methodists, mass events organizers and guides.
Each of us can do some work best of all, and working
together, we make up a surprisingly harmonious,
industrious, creative and very friendly collective.
This collective can overcome a great number of
difficulties, of objective and subjective nature,
which are constantly experienced by any museum.
Yet, everything goes smooth, because we have one,
common ideal which is the Museum. It is our icon
and our religion.
Today the museum is a unique
collection of the ancient and modern Dyatkovo
crystal. We carefully keep samples of serial and
mass produce of the plant: unique works of talented
distinguished masters and professional artists,
a brilliant collection of the best produce of
the plant made at different stages of its history.
The classical traditions of
the Russian artistic glassmaking are represented
here with a wonderful collection of the best produce
of the plant at different stages of its history,
unique items of decorum for interiors, presents
to popular people, pearls of the Maltsovs' industrial
empire in documents.
Over 13 thousand exhibits are displayed on the
exposition area of about three thousand square
metres. In twenty five years of its existence
the museum has been visited by more than one million
people, among them
twenty per cent are foreign delegations. Over
120 exhibitions have been held so far. Nowadays,
the museum is the biggest not only in our country,
but it exceeds many museums in the world in the
richness of the unique collection.
